Chocolate Drop Cookies

  • 1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1/4 cup Crisco shortening or use 1 stick (4 ounces) unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, melted
  • 13/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts

Heat the oven to 350 degrees.

Cream the butter and shortening. Add sugar gradually. Beat well.

Beat in egg, then the melted chocolate.

Stir together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Add to chocolate mixture alternately with milk. Mix well. Stir in vanilla and nuts.

Drop dough by tablespoons 2 inches apart onto ungreased baking sheet. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until set. Let cool briefly, then cool on rack.

Makes 3 dozen.

Note: NaNa finished the cookies by topping with chocolate icing.
